Natural Remedies for Heartburn

Fortunately, for many of us, there are a variety of natural remedies for heartburn remedy options available to those who suffer from the painful symptoms of heartburn.

Unfortunately, when was the last time you felt this not-so-appealing sensation: heartburn, or acid reflux.

Heartburn is not a pleasant feeling; in fact, for some it can be downright incapacitating and unbearable.

What Cause Heartburn?

The burning feeling you might experience is caused by acid reflux, which occurs when stomach acid splashes up into your esophagus, causing a burning sensation in your chest.

This is one of the most common causes of heartburn, and it affects over 70% of Americans.

It is caused by eating too many foods with high levels of acidity and acid production.

Foods that are hard to digest, spicy, or acidic can cause heartburn, as can some citrus fruits and juices.

You can alleviate the burning feeling by reducing or removing these foods from your diet.

 Apple Cider Vinegar

One natural remedy for heartburn is apple cider vinegar.

If you have heartburn frequently, apple cider vinegar mixed with water can help relieve the symptoms.

For best results, mix two to three tablespoons of vinegar with eight ounces of water and drink the solution at least six times a day.

Baking Soda

Another natural remedy for heartburn is baking soda, as baking soda has diuretic properties that help reduce the production of stomach acids.

By mixing a tablespoon of baking soda with water, you can make a paste like substance that can be applied to the affected area.

This should be done several times a day, and it will help neutralize the acid reflux, gastric juices, and stomach acids.

However, this should not be used by pregnant women, children younger than six years old, or people with severe acid reflux or heartburn problems.

Consult your doctor first before taking this or any other remedy.


Bromelain is an enzyme derived from pineapples and has proven to be beneficial in treating heartburn and indigestion symptoms.

Mixing a teaspoon of fresh bromelain with one-half glass of water and drinking this mixture several times a day will help relieve symptoms of both heartburn and indigestion.

However, you should not drink the mixture after the meal because of the stomach acid that may enter the esophagus.

Bromelain helps digestion by breaking down and dissolving the acid in the stomach.

Milk & Sesame Seed

Milk thistle seed extract has proven to be helpful in alleviating symptoms associated with heartburn and indigestion.

Dissolving a tablespoon of sesame seeds in a glass of water and taking the extract several times a day relieves symptoms of indigestion and prevents the release of excess stomach acid.

While this is believed to be effective against heartburn and h. pylori bacteria, it is best to use it along with milk and wheat germ oil for better effects.


Ginger, a common spice found in Chinese and Indian foods, can also help ease symptoms associated with heartburn.

A teaspoonful of ground ginger mixed with one-half glass of water before meals will dissolve stomach acid and reduce pain associated with heartburn.

However, this remedy is not recommended for people with heartburn or acid reflux disease as it may cause symptoms such as spasms and difficulty swallowing.

It’s best to consume ginger in its raw form for best results.


Garlic is another ingredient that you may want to consider adding to your daily intake.

It contains anti-bacterial properties that can help reduce inflammation of the stomach which may help prevent overgrowth of H. pylori and other bacteria that may cause gastroesophageal reflux disease. It can also minimize the burning sensation of heartburn by relaxing the muscles of the esophagus. While these side effects may scare you off, most people report they actually prefer the taste of garlic over soda pop or other diet beverages because it tastes so good.
